The finale of Netflix's thriller Kate starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead seeking revenge.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead also demonstrates good performance in this film. With a tragic backstory and a penchant for a crossbow, audiences began to love her character, who certainly had trouble dealing with anger.

Winstead plays the homonymous killer who realizes that it is time to quit the game after inadvertently killing a man in front of her daughter.

Months later, when she is in town, she discovers that someone has poisoned her and she has only 24 hours left to live. She uses the little time she has left to track down the man responsible for her death.

Unlike many other films with a similar premise, Kate doesn't bother looking for a cure. She practically accepts her fate and takes some drugs to boost her adrenaline for the time being.

She simply wants closure and the knowledge that she has taken revenge on the person responsible for her death. The film doesn't exactly hold your hand during the torturous final act, so here's what you need to know about the action-packed finale of “Kate”.

Kate goes on a rampage and kills several members of the Yakuza while she searches for answers on who poisoned her. Once she gets a name, it's just a matter of getting it out of her hiding place so she can put a bullet in his head.

When it comes time for her to confront Kijima (Jun Kunimura), he tells her that he has no reason to kill her. It is then that she reveals the real machinations of what has been going on all along.

Apparently, Kijima wasn't behind all of this. Renji (Tadanobu Asano) ordered the blow in the first scene which resulted in the death of Ani's father (Miku Martineau). Renji teamed up with Varrick (Woody Harrelson), and while Varrick didn't know about the plot until after the fact, he eventually got along.

Renji couldn't risk Kate living a civilized life and potentially divulging the secrets of what she had done, otherwise, he would have jeopardized the power she so desperately desired.

The double game in the finale of the thriller Kate

It's the classic double game of the revenge thriller. Varrick never had Kate's best interests at heart. He used it as a tool to eliminate anyone who had a price on her head, but when it becomes even a small obstacle, he wants to do away with her.

Once Varrick reveals to Ani that Kate killed her father, Ani shoots Kate. She then goes off with Varrick, and that's when we realize what her game has been all along.

Through a sequence of flashbacks, we learn that Kate's parents died when she was 12. Shortly thereafter, Varrick picked her up and presumably began training her to be a deadly assassin.

Apparently, he wanted to do the same thing with Ani. Kate practically killed her entire family trying to find the one responsible for her poisoning, so she has no one left. She would have been the ideal killer by then, and she already knew how to handle a gun pretty well.

Of course, Kate won't allow this to happen as the two bonded over the course of the film. There is no way Kate can save herself, so she takes out Varrick and Renji for her last act of bravery. At the same time, she reconciles with Ani, showing her that there is another way to live.

She creates a sense of closure that Kate ultimately wanted to achieve and, in the end, she technically got what she wanted. She tried to stop being a killer so she could start a family, and for a short time, she achieved exactly that with Ani.

Is Kate dead?

Yes, by the end of the film, Kate has succumbed to her injuries. There is really nothing to do. In addition to the poisoning, she has also been hit and affected so many times; she is kind of a miracle that she has been able to walk and fight for as long as she has been on.

However, once her enemies are dead and Ani is safe, there is no reason to keep fighting. She lies down as she hears the faint sound of a heartbeat over the music. Just before the film rolls to the end credits, the heartbeat stops, indicating her death.

Throughout the film, we come to empathize with Kate. We don't want her to die, and as she continues her killing spree about her, we keep hoping she'll talk about a cure. But this never comes. When you live a life of violence, there is only one way out.

At least Kate died knowing she did something good in the world to undo all the damage she caused. This obviously leads to a conclusion that does not give the possibility of any sequel to the film. There won't be a Kate 2 on the horizon.

Kate follows a trend in female killer films

The film Kate is the third film to feature a killer series trained from an early age to kill. Netflix in July 2021 also proposed "Gunpowder Milkshake". In August, “The Protégé” was released, starring Maggie Q as the armed hitwoman.

Obviously, killer women are nothing new in cinema, but it is curious to point out that Netflix has invested in three projects of this type.
